Search for two people who were believed to have been trapped under the rubble of a building that collapsed in Gatanga on Friday, December 17, has been called off after one of the two appeared at the site Monday afternoon.

Stephen Musembi who was working as a plumber at the site said he was in the company of five other workmates when the incident happened, and that he escaped by a whisker.

He confirmed that the other person, who was also being suspected to be under the rubble, escaped safely too.

He said that together with his colleagues, they escaped the tragedy by sheer luck when the building collapsed a few steps away from where they were.

He revealed that he spent the Friday night at the scene but went to his home the following day after the rescue operation team arrived at the site.

"I went home very traumatized and I could not show up at my workplace until Sunday," he said.

Musembi said that it is one of the people who was trapped inside the building that claimed that he was also trapped inside.

"We were together before the building collapsed and that's why he thought we could still be in there," he said.

Bilha Wanjiku, the County Disaster Management team leader said the details given by Musembi were exactly as those given on the search list.

"He also gave us the contact of the other person and we called to confirm he is alive, "she said.

Though the search is over, the equipment that was used in the rescue mission still remains at the site.

The search and rescue mission of the two individuals was on the third day where five bodies were retrieval and one person was rescued alive.
