The family of 23-year-old interior designer Jeff Mwathi who died on February 22, 2023, after allegedly falling from Kikuyu singer DJ Fatxo's 10th-floor apartment in Kasarani is taking a step ahead to seek justice for their kin as plans of his exhumation are in top gear.

The decision to have his body exhumed was announced last week, by the police barely weeks after the probe into his death took a turn based on information learned during investigations which ruled out suicide.

“Detectives are looking at several dimensions including where they say he passed and dropped to the ground. We are moving to court to seek an order for the exhumation,” Koome stated.

The police boss affirmed that anyone found culpable in the death of Mwathi would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

"We are doing thorough investigations. There is a lot going on. Whoever is found culpable will face the law," he added.

So far, tents have been pitched around his grave ahead of the exercise and once exhumed, a postmortem examination will be conducted by Chief Gov’t Pathologist Johansen Oduor.

The probe into Jeff Mwathi's mystery death took a turn after Interior and Administration of National Government Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki asked Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to take over investigations.

Authorities have not announced a connection between Jeff's death and DJ Fatxo although the latter has consistently maintained innocence and pledged to cooperate with the investigation officers.

Uproar over Jeff Mwathi death

Jeff Mwathi'mysterious death drew public interest with members of parliament recently calling for the exhumation of his body for DNA tests. They said this would help identify prime suspects.

Led by Njoro MP Charity Kathambi, the legislators claimed the deceased was hurriedly buried without a complete report from the DCI.

She alleged Mwathi was sexually assaulted before being killed in Kasarani and accused the police of an attempt to cover up the alleged murder, saying the main suspect in Mwathi's death was well-connected and was planning on fleeing the country.

“We want to remind Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki that we are not going to sleep till Jeff gets justice,” Kathambis stated.

“This case looks like a very organised movie led by a boss. But we don’t care about your connection or how big you are. We must get justice for Jeff."

The DCI had on March 17 announced progress into the probe saying several suspects have been interviewed.

The agency, in a statement, said phase one of the probe had been completed.

"The process included interviewing of the first cluster of witnesses in the case, forensic examination of the scene, and retrieval of CCTV footage that captured the deceased's last moments. Several other Forensic experts based at the DCI National Forensic Laboratory who are augmenting the Homicide team have equally collected crucial evidence and the same is being analyzed scientifically.

"We are now progressing to the second phase of the investigations where several persons of interest in the case will be interrogated and appropriate recommendations made before being forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for action," DCI stated.
