Former Prisons Commissioner Isaiah Osugo has passed away at the age of 67.

His nephew Boniface Kengere confirmed that the police boss passed away on the night of Monday, January 9, 2023.

Osugo died while receiving treatment at the Nairobi Hospital ICU after a long battle with cancer.

He had previously sought treatment in India, however, his condition worsened.

"He had battled cancer for about two years. After the August 2022 General elections, he was taken to India for specialised treatment. He came back but his health deteriorated in the last two weeks and was taken to Nairobi hospital," Kengere told the Nation.

Osugo who is known for his transformational leadership and unique prison reforms has served as prisons boss since September 2008 following his appointment by former President Mwai Kibaki.

His term was later extended for two years in 2016 by former president Uhuru Kenyatta.

Prior to his appointment, he served as the Nairobi Provincial Criminal Investigations Department (CID) chief.
