IG Japhet Koome condemns armed officer captured harassing member of public in viral video

The Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome seeks a probe following a viral video of police harassing a member of the public.

Via press release on Saturday, February 25, the police boss reprimanded the police officer who was captured in the video harassing and threatening the unidentified person while armed and appearing drunk.

Koome noted, the National Police Service (NPS) shall not condone or protect officers found guilty of such acts henceforth.

"The attention of the National Police Service(NPS) is hereby drawn to an online video depicting a police officer harassing and threatening a member of the public while armed and appearing intoxicated.

"As a service, we are gravely concerned by, and strongly condemn the misconduct displayed by the officer. It should be clear that NPS shall not condone or protect any officer found engaging in abuse of his/her powers and/or privileges or any other action that can bring disrepute to the image of the police," the statement reads.

The IG further informed that the officer has since been identified and the matter is currently under investigation.

"The officer has been identified and the incident is currently being reviewed for appropriate internal disciplinary action."
