The electoral commission has cleared Anne Kananu Mwenda for consideration by the Nairobi County Assembly members as Mike Sonko's deputy.

The clearance by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is in compliance with a Supreme Court advisory and IEBC guidelines on filling vacancies in the deputy governor's seat.

Nairobi Governor Sonko picked Ms. Kananu to deputize him on January 6, 2020, citing the need for continuity after his suspension from office over the Sh357 million graft case.

Sonko had stayed without a deputy governor for two years after his running mate Polycarp Igathe resigned in January 2018.

Mr. Igathe said he had lost his boss's trust and could not continue in his capacity as the deputy governor.

When Nairobi Speaker Beatrice Elachi issued directions to MCAs on the vetting of Sonko's nominee, she reminded the Assembly that the vacancy has to be filled in accordance with guidelines developed by IEBC in conformity with the Supreme Court advisory.

Ms Kananu was given the green light by Nairobi Returning Officer Joseph Melee on Monday, February 10, 2020.

Now Ms.Kananu will face a Select Committee since her name has been forwarded for vetting.
