A policeman attached to Kamukunji Police Station in Nairobi has been arrested for preying on National Treasury officials.

Detectives said that Corporal Daniel Arimba Rioba, together with an accomplice who escaped their dragnet, demanded and received Sh200,000 bribe from a Treasury staff on Wednesday.

Police said their rogue colleagues demanded the bribe in the pretext that they were investigating the Treasury employee over a corruption-related offense.

In return for the bribe, the policeman secured the release of the official, whom they seemed to have had in their custody.

Detectives pounced on Mr Rioba as he waited with his accomplice outside the National Treasury to receive another bribe from a trader they had cornered near the building.

The officers were waiting for a Sh100,000 bribe from the businessman to secure his release.

“The said officer together with another who escaped, went further to arrest another businessman at the National Treasury building on allegations of forgery and demanded Sh100,000 to secure his release. It was when they were waiting for the money that Corporal Rioba was arrested,” said DCI on Twitter.

To avoid falling prey to rogue policemen, the DCI has urged the public to always insist on being shown detectives certificates of appointment whenever they come calling.
