A house help has been released on a Ksh1 million bond after she was accused of stealing money from her employer in Nairobi.

Lilian Lavine Matere, 31, is accused of breaking into her employer’s safe and walking away with money worth Ksh2 million in different currencies.

Makadara Law court heard that on diverse dates between August 1, 2021, and January 8, 2022, Lilian stole safe keys belonging to her employer, one Moses Ndung’u, opened his safe and took the said money.

She later requested days off on the pretext of seeking medical treatment at her Kimilili home only for Ndung’u to later discover that he had lost the money, plus the keys.

The matter was then reported to Buruburu police station and investigations commenced leading to her arrest at her rental house in Kimilili area where some cash amounting to Ksh100,000 in Kenyan currency was recovered. Others were in pounds, dollars and Dirham.

Three receipts of exchanged currencies, a copy of ID belonging to Ndung’u and a bunch of the lost keys, which Ndung’u confirmed to be his, were also recovered.

Police took an inventory of all the items which were recovered and the accused was taken back to Nairobi where she was charged before Senior Resident Magistrate M. Mulinge.

She pleaded not guilty and was released on a bond of Ksh1 million pending hearing on April 5, 2022.

“On diverse dates between August 1, 2021, and January 8, 2022, within the republic of Kenya being a house help stole you Ksh2,000,000 in different foreign currencies which came to your possession by virtue of employment,” the charge sheet read before the court said in part.
