Hawker in court for attacking county askari during crackdown

A 26-year-old hawker was arraigned in court for assaulting a Nairobi county askari by biting his left hand during an arrest.

Jane Wangare Mwangi who has been charged at Milimani law courts with one count of assault is alleged to have committed the offence on February 23, 2022, at Nairobi CBD.

"You are charged that on February 23, 2022, along Haile Selassie Avenue in Nairobi willfully and intentionally assaulted Vincent Makori Okero thereby occasioning him actual bodily harm," the charge sheet read in parts.

According to police documents produced in court, on the material day at around 1450hrs, the complainant who works at Nairobi Metropolitan Services as an enforcement officer was on duty along Haile Selassie Avenue on a crackdown of hawkers.

He was accompanied by his colleague when they came across one hawker, Jane Wangare, who was hawking along the street.

"The complainant tried to pick the items the accused person had displayed on the road but was attacked in the process by the accused who bit him on the left hand," the police report further read.

In the process, the complainant pulled himself back to rescue himself from the hawker but sustained a serious injury.

The askari was treated at Mbagathi hospital and has since been discharged. 

Jane pleaded not guilty before Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi and was released on a cash bail of Ksh15,000.
