Police officers based in Homa Bay County are in pursuit of a retired soldier who allegedly killed his 91-year-old mother over a land dispute.

The suspect whose identity remains concealed allegedly killed his mother Hellen Ajwang Odiango at Obisain West Kamagak in Rachuonyo Sub- County.

According to locals, the suspect has been having issues with his mother over a piece of land in their rural home.

It is said hell broke loose on Friday last week, when the suspect picked up a fight with his ageing mother over the land in question.

He then became physical and got aggressive with his mother before stabbing her neck and chest using a kitchen knife.

Neighbours rushed her to a local facility, but she passed on before she could arrive at the Rachuonyo South Sub- County hospital.

Lilies Wachira who is the Rachuonyo South Sub-County police commander said that the ex-soldier fled his home after ending his mother’s life.

“The suspect fled as soon as he committed the heinous act, but we are still looking for him. We have been informed that he has been living in Tanzania,” she said.

She further said that the police had shared details with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) who have launched a manhunt for the suspect.

Wachira also urged locals to make a report as soon as they spot the suspect instead of taking actions on their own hands.

“Also, if you are facing issues in the family, it is better to seek advice from others instead of fighting or ending the life of someone,” she said.

Ajwang’s body was then moved to Rachuonyo South Sub-County Hospital morgue awaiting post-mortem.

Area residents are still in shock and could not fathom how the land dispute caused the death of the granny who has been described as humble, understanding and very loving.
