A 70-year-old man committed suicide by hanging himself on a tree on Sunday evening September 25, 2022, at Sigoro village, Baringo, county over family land distribution wrangles.

While confirming the bizarre incident, Stephen Chemas, Chemorgong location Chief, said that the deceased, Joseph Keitany, reportedly went missing the night before his body was found dangling on a tree with a rope around his neck.

Chemas said that the body of the deceased was spotted by a teen who was fishing on a nearby river who then reported the matter to the authorities.

“It is alleged that Keitany went missing on Saturday at around 10 PM, efforts in locating him however went futile not until the following day when his body was found dangling on a tree by a teen fishing on the river,” He said.

The administrator said that the deceased is suspected to have taken his life following a row with his family members who had persistent wrangles over the land distribution.

A letter was retrieved from the left pocket of his trouser which he attributed his death to a family dispute concerning the family land distribution.

The area Chief however urged the locals to seek help from government agencies and social institutions and not let their distresses result in drastic actions like committing suicide.

The police officers visited the scene and moved the body of the deceased to Eldama Ravine sub-county referral hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem as investigations into the matter kicked off.
