Like him or not, Deputy President William Ruto will be on the right side of history regarding the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) referendum, says Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana.

In a statement he shared on his Twitter handle, Governor Kibwana says the DP's stand on the Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2020, has vindicated him from fault.

"One may like or not like the Deputy President @WilliamsRuto. One may not be on the same side as he is. But on this BBI matter, history will judge him kindly. His position has affirmed the 2010 Constitution which originally he did not," he wrote on Twitter.

The BBI referendum Bill was brought to a halt on Thursday after a five-judge High Court bench declared it null and void.

The five judges include Justices Joel Ngugi, George Odunga, Jairus Ngaah, Teresia Matheka and Chacha Mwita.

The five unanimously issued a permanent injunction to the IEBC from making processes regarding the amendment of the constitution.

The DP, prior to the ruling, had not come out to publicly oppose or endorse the amendments even though most of his close allies have vehemently dismissed the change of constitution.

During the launch of the BBI report at Bomas of Kenya, the DP poked holes in a number of proposals that were enumerated in the report.

He also proposed the need for Kenyans to be given the chance to vote on specific issues rather than a YES or NO option on the referendum.

His proposals, however, were not considered as the BBI proponents went on with the amendment bid without any changes.

The High Court ruling somewhat vindicated the DP as the BBI process was ruled unprocedural and illegal. Some of his recommendations, highlighted in the ruling, were stated as right.

The DP has since called for the obedience of court orders and asked Kenyans to defend the independence of institutions.

On Friday, he stated that it is time to focus on the Big Four agenda and vaccination of Kenya against the Covid-19 pandemic.
