Mombasa County Commander Stephen Matu has issued an arrest warrant against Governor Ali Hassan Joho for failing to pay a Ksh250,000 fine.

Justice Munyao Sila on May 21 directed the Governor to pay the said amount as a fine or face 60 days imprisonment for contempt of court.

Governor Joho is yet to make the payment as directed resulting in the arrest warrant being issued against him.

The Governor was found guilty of contempt of court in a case where he is accused of overseeing the demolition of private property.

Joho was charged alongside Changamwe MCA, Bernard Ogutu.

In the case filed at the Environment and Land Court in 2019 by businessman Ashok Doshi, the complainant says his plot was raided by Mombasa County officers on February 2, 2019, resulting in chaos and damage.

The businessman went to court and obtained an injunction that blocked the Mombasa County officers and employees against accessing the plot.

Joho and the Changamwe MCA are later said to have defied the court order and stormed the plot on May 10, 2019, in the company of about 100 hired goons and other political leaders including Omar Mwinyi, and caused more damage.

The businessman went back to court and successfully filed for contempt of court against the Governor and the MCA.
