Plot owners, who are set to receive Ksh2.2 billion in compensation for the expansion of Mama Ngina University in Mutomo village, Gatundu South, have been warned against misusing the money in entertainment joints.

Gatundu South Deputy County Commissioner Stanley Kamande and local leaders insisted that as the release of the money beckons, residents should be wary of sex workers who could throng the village keen to cash in from the land owners.

Kamande warned men especially to be careful of short-lived bliss with the women who often book lodging rooms to avoid regrets.

He advised them to have a sitting with their wives to properly plan for the money that he said could help them buy land elsewhere or start income-generating activities as a future investment.

“It is time for you to keep your families more united. Women, help your husbands in planning for the money even before it’s credited to your respective accounts. This way, it will be hard to divert it for other practices,” he said.

Speaking during Jamhuri Day celebrations at Mutomo shopping centre, Kamande at the same time said the government will work towards sensitizing them on how to best put the money into a constructive investment stating that unless they heed the advice, many of them could end up regretting after being conned out of their money derived from sale of inherited land.

“As a government, we want you to fully enjoy the compensation by putting it into meaningful use. We want you to buy land elsewhere, and start a business that will help you grow economically. We will sensitize you enough to help you avert regrets after squandering the money with those girls who wear short dresses,” Kamande stated.

His sentiments were echoed by Ng’enda Ward MCA Joe Kigara who reiterated the need for residents to be frugal and carefully invest the money for better lives.

Kigara said his office would offer professional advice through investment companies to the willing to ensure that they all enjoy the compensation for years.

“My office will work together with investment professionals to help you put your money where you will earn more. We can help you put your compensation fee into money markets among other investment portfolios because we don’t want you to double the challenges we have all faced this year,” Kigara stated.

Residents led by Ng’ang’a Thairu and Gitau Gatonye said that while the university will be beneficial to locals, residents could be turned into beggars should they misuse the compensation.

Thairu advised women to get hold of their men by enhancing their hygiene and looks to outsmart prostitutes who often clothe better.

In May this year, the National Land Commission (NLC) brokered a deal bringing the compensation row pitting Mutomo Land Owners Association and the government to an end.

The 179 property owners were to receive some Ksh2.2 billion for their quarter-acre plots which have been acquired by the state to pave way for the university expansion.

The highest amount to be paid per plot is Ksh35 million.

The university was constructed in 2019 on 10.3 acres and the management has been seeking 40 acres for expansion.
