Police in Athi River, Machakos County have launched a hunt for five suspects who broke into a youthful couple’s home in Katani, raped the female owner of the house and stole property and cash.

The five-man gang was armed with crude weapons, Katani Assistant Chief Nicholas Wambua told K24 Digital.

The robbers made away with the couple’s mobile phones, laptop, car keys and undisclosed amount of money.

“They tied the male owner of the house and, thereafter, raped his wife, who is in her early thirties, before making away with their electronic devices,” said Wambua.

According to the administrator, the robbers attempted to steal the couple’s car before changing their mind.

“They, instead, took off with the man’s car keys,” said Wambua.

The female victim was taken to a Kitengela health facility for treatment.

Katani estate chairperson Jimmy Nguli said they have, of late, witnessed a rise in cases of home burglaries.

“We are urging police to increase patrol in the area, particularly at night,” he said.
