Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday hosted his long-time friend, Maina Muchangi, for breakfast at his residence in Mathira, Nyeri County.

The two friends first crossed paths 18 years ago with the deputy president making him a promise that he would always look after him.

Taking to his X account, Gachagua expressed the significance of keeping promises and the responsibility of ensuring the comfort and well-being of the vulnerable members of society.

"A Leader's word must have value. The value is in keeping a promise made. We met 18 years ago; we agreed that whenever we meet, I must take care of him - by giving him something. And since then, I have kept my promise," Gachagua shared.

"This morning was one of those moments - A promise kept, and a happy Maina. It is gratifying to take care of the vulnerable in our society. It is our responsibility to ensure their comfort," the Deputy President wrote.

The breakfast event not only highlighted the strong friendship between Gachagua and Mr Muchangi but also served as an opportunity for the Deputy President to reconnect with his neighbours in the village.

"It was also time to catch up with my other neighbours at the village," he remarked.

Gachagua's Ksh 1,000 promise

In May 2022, during his brother's funeral, Gachagua, who held the position of Mathira MP at the time, once again honoured his commitment to Maina.

Despite initial obstacles preventing Maina from approaching him, Gachagua extended a welcoming gesture, gesturing for him to come forward.

Gachagua interrupted his eulogy to convey, signalling Maina to join him. After a brief exchange, Gachagua reached into his pocket and handed Maina a note.

"Over 18 years ago, Muchangi and I made an agreement that whenever we cross paths, I would provide him with Ksh1,000. Now he informs me that he has been patiently waiting since 7 am and wishes to be on his way," he said.
