As the year ends, K24 Digital looks at bizarre stories from Kirinyaga county that traumatized the entire country in 2021.

Man kills his entire family over onion

In November 2021, shock and anguish gripped residents of Kirinyaga county after a man identified as Paul Murange Njuki,35, confessed to wiping out his entire family of five using an ax.

Murange then presented himself at Kianyaga Police Station in Kirinyaga County demanding to be arrested and locked for six months as punishment for the heinous act.

Police say the man axed his wife Millicent Muthomi, 38, and their four children; two daughters and two sons, aged between 1 and 13 years.

Before killing his eldest daughter, Njuki defiled her and later hid the killer ax along the river banks in his neighborhood.

According to the residents in Kathata, Kirinyaga county, where he hails from, the man differed with his wife over lack of onion in the evening delicacy.

The man wanted onions in food, but the wife insisted she did not have them.

Beheaded body found in river Nyamindi

In October, residents of the county woke up to a traumatizing incident after the beheaded body of an unidentified man was retrieved from river Nyamindi in Mbiri village.

Confirming the incident, Gîchûgû Sub County police Commander Antony Mbogo said that the body may have been in the river for two months

The decomposing body was discovered by locals who later notified the police who responded swiftly and the retrieval of the body commenced immediately.

Man digs own grave, burns his house and commits suicide

Still in October, residents of Rwathia village in Karumandi ward, Kirinyaga County were treated to a rare drama following a bone-chilling incident where a 48-year-old man set his house on fire before committing suicide.

The man identified as Joel Muthike had also dug his own grave where it’s suspected that the deceased wished to be buried following his demise.

According to residents, after Muthike set his semi-permanent house on fire, he used a panga to thwart any effort by the members of the public to try and put out the fire.

“I have never seen anything like it, he chased us away when we tried to put out the fire,” a resident said then.

After the house was burnt to ashes, Muthike turned his rage to his livestock.

It was also reportedly said that Muthike used a rope he had been using to tether his goat, to commit suicide.

His body was discovered dangling from a tree within his shamba.
