Four people have perished while three others sustained injuries after an accident occurred along at Kaburengu bridge along the Eldoret -Malaba highway.
According to eyewitnesses, a lorry transporting sand from Eldoret faulted its breaks, hit a saloon car before hitting a pick-up and landing on a Probox that exploded into flames.
Due to delayed fire extinguishing services, the four occupants of the Probox were burnt beyond recognition.
However, the driver of the lorry sustained minor injuries and was rushed to Webuye County hospital.
“This lorry was coming from Chimoi direction. All of a sudden, it sped up and lost control and hit the probox. We rushed here to rescue people but the fire sparked from nowhere. We decide to rescue ourselves by running away from the scene,” a witness said.
Western Corridors Traffic boss Joshua Nasimi also confirmed the incident advising motorists to take preauction around that place.
“It is so unfortunate that we have lost four people whose bodies have been burnt beyond recognition in this accident. Three others were rushed to Webuye hospital with serious injuries,” Nasimi said.
“Kaburengu is a hotspot area to all road users. People should take precautions while driving here. I urge drivers to avoid speeding up while driving on hotspots. They should obey traffic signs,” he added.
Residents are now calling on the government to add a new lane on the road since it has turned out to be a hotspot area.
They also urge the county government to install fire extinguishing machines in Webuye town.
“This road clearly needs an additional lane because it is a hot spot. Leaders should also ensure we have fire extinguishers near, maybe in Webuye town,” a resident said.
