Police in Tanzania have killed a gunman, believed to be of Somali origin, who was on a shooting spree along the Ali Hassan Mwinyi Road located in the neighbourhood of the French Embassy, Dar Es Salaam.

The incident happened on the afternoon of August 25.

Tanzanian-based media reports indicate that the Inspector General of Police Simon Sirro has confirmed the incident and said 3 police officers and a private security guard have been killed by the armed gunman.

“Mkuu wa maeshi la Polisi Tanzania, IGP Simon Sirro amethibitisha kutokea kwa mauaji ya askari wawili jirani na ubalozi wa Ufaransa jijini Dar es Salam yaliyofanyika na mtu mmoja ambaye inasemekana ni Msomali ambaye pia amefariki baada ya kutekeleza mauaji hayo (Inspector General of Police Simon Sirro has confirmed a murder incident of two security men killed in the neighbourhood of France embassy. The two deaths were occasioned by a man suspected to be of Somali origin who has also been killed),” Wasafi FM report reads.

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu condoled with the families of the bereaved and called for immediate investigations.

“Natoa pole kwa Jeshi la Polisi na familia za Askari 3, na Askari 1 wa kampuni ya ulinzi ya SGA waliopoteza maisha baada ya mtu aliyekuwa na silaha kuwashambulia katika eneo la Salenda, Dar es Salaam. Mtu huyo amedhibitiwa na hali ni shwari. Nawaagiza Polisi kuchunguza kwa kina(I send out my condolences to the families of three police officers and one security guard from the SGA company who have lost their lives after being killed by a gun-wielding man in Salenda area, Dar es Salaam. The gunman has been contained and our security status is now safe. I am directing the police to investigate the matter in detail),” she said.

Video footage of the incident showed the armed man firing aimlessly in the air as he walked from one point to another.

Motorists on the adjacent Oyesterbay-Upanga road were forced to abandon their vehicles as they scampered to safety.

The identity and nationality of the man are yet to be established by the time of going to press.

The motive of his shooting spree is a subject of ongoing investigations.
