Former Laikipia North Member of Parliament (MP) Mathew Lempurkel has been charged afresh with hate speech.

This is after the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji amended the charges against him by introducing an additional charge of hate speech.

According to the new charges, Lempurkel was accused that on July 17, 2021, within the republic of Kenya while on a television show aired at Maa TV made hateful remarks by uttering abusive and threatening words towards members of the White community in Laikipia county.

Further, the former lawmaker was accused of willfully and unlawfully making hateful remarks in Maa language referring to Kikuyus as 'those people whose feet are infested with jiggers.'

He also claimed that all conservancies and ranches within Laikipia belong to the Maa Community, remarks which brought lawlessness within Laikipia County.

He however denied all the charges and was released on the earlier bail terms of Ksh150,000 by Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi.

The case will be mentioned on February 16.
