A Form Three student at a Bungoma secondary school was arrested on Wednesday for dumping her newborn baby girl in a pit latrine.

The 17-year-old girl, who had travelled from her parents’ home to her grandmother’s place in Misikhu, gave birth the same day she arrived at her grandma’s place.

Surprisingly the elderly woman did not even realise that the girl was pregnant.

After taking supper on Tuesday night, the teenager began complaining of severe backache and digestive disorders.

The girl’s grandmother thought that the food the minor ate that night was responsible for her abdominal pains.

Later in the night, the girl, who had gone to sleep in a house neighbouring her grandmother’s, began experiencing labour pains.

With no one in the house that she was accommodated in, the girl managed to deliver herself of the baby.

When the girl’s grandmother went over to wake the girl up on Wednesday, she was shocked to find a collection of heavily blood-stained bedding.

Upon asking her granddaughter what had transpired at night, she heard faint cries of a baby emanating from the pit latrine located a few meters from where the teenager slept.

It was at that point that the new mother confessed to her wrongs.

The girl’s grandmother immediately called police, who swiftly arrived at the scene and rescued the infant.

The baby girl was taken to Webuye Sub-County Hospital, where doctors established that it was in good health and weighed 3.1 kilograms. The baby remains admitted at the health facility as police continue to hold the suspect.
