Gendia Boys High School in Rachuonyo North, Homabay County has been left counting losses worth millions after an inferno gutted down one dormitory.

The fire that is believed to have started at around 4:30 am destroyed properties of about 140 students.

Confirming the incident, Rachuonyo North Sub-county Police Commander Sarah Chum said students heard a loud noise from one corner of the dormitory followed by a huge smoke.

She said that fire broke out when the students were preparing to go to class.

"Some students had already left for class while the few who were remaining were forced to run away leaving their belongings behind," she noted.

The police boss informed us that no one sustained injuries during the breakout and they have since launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the fire.

The dormitory which was made of iron sheets had been recently constructed to reduce congestion.
