Fierce fire has broken out at the Kisumu county government offices.

It was not immediately established what caused the inferno at the Urban Planning and Lands department.

According to eyewitnesses, heavy smoke was spotted billowing from the prosperity building on the 9th floor.

Kisumu County Central Deputy County Commissioner John Cheruiyot has also confirmed that the fire started from the 9th floor of the 16-storey building.

Authorities immediately called the fire officials as the fire started to rage and spread to the adjacent government offices.

The Kisumu county fire brigade then dashed to the scene to help extinguish the fire.

The firefighters responded 15 minutes later and helped control the blaze within less than one hour.

"City fire brigade officers drove in speed and to the spot and succeeded in bringing the fire under control in record minutes," Cheruiyot said.

The fire left several office documents, office stationery and computer accessories, completely destroyed.

Some offices for directors were partially damaged as fire aided by the strong winds spread fast to neighbouring offices.

But there was no report of any casualties.

An officer manning the gates said they acted and helped the fire brigade team dash quickly to rescue the situation.

Both Cheruiyot, and Regional Police commander John Karanja were in the scene to control traffic and launch investigation.
