A family in Bungoma has been living in fear after lightning struck their homestead splitting into many pieces a tree in the compound.

The striking struck this week during heavy rains experienced at the Misikhu village in Webuye Sub-County.

Villagers have been streaming one by one to witness for themselves the act of nature, which the locals believe portends a bad omen.

Joshua Wanyoyi, whose tree was struck, now wants village elders to cleanse his home “before the worst happens.”

Other villagers have also supported the call for elders to cleanse the home, fearing what happens in that home may affect theirs.

Lightning science

Lightning often strikes tall structures such as trees, metal poles, television antennas and buildings. Since the atmosphere is a good insulator, lighting follows the path of least resistance.

Therefore, to avoid being hit by lightning, one is often advised to get indoors if possible. Where that is not possible, one should get as low as possible and avoid being near tall structures.
