Residents of Kagio town have raised concern over increased cases of insecurity where thugs break into their houses, eat and drink before making away with various electronics gadgets and household items.

Residents have lost electronic gadgets worth thousands of shillings to a suspected youth gang which has been roaming the town at night causing terror amongst the residents.

Nelly Mutugi, a victim, says that the thugs broke into her house, ate the food she had prepared and also drank some milk.

After enjoying the meal, the uninvited guests then stole electronic gadgets worth over Ksh 35,000

“They stole a smartphone worth over Ksh25, 000 ans a TV screen valued at around Ksh7, 000,” she said

The theft, Mutugi said happened while she was deep asleep.

Elizabeth Wairimu, a business lady at Kagio was also shocked when she woke up to an almost empty house.

At the fateful Wednesday night, she lost electronic gadgets worth over Ksh30, 000.

“The shameful thugs stole my daughter’s smartphone worth over KS10, 000 and also managed to get away with a mobile phone valued at about Ksh20,000,” she said.

Her daughter who is a university student had been using the smartphone for her studies.

Elizabeth’s daughter had also brought along a lady friend home for a visit.

Residents suspect that the thugs first drug them before making a move.

The idea of being drugged has been triggered by the fact that the thugs carry out their illegal operation in houses when the owners are in bed.

“We found a stick with a sock wrapped on one end. We suspect that is what they are using to unlock the doors locked from the inside,” a lady only identified as Mercy told K24 Digital.

Confirming the incident, Kirinyaga West Subcounty Police Commander said that she is aware of the situation and investigations are ongoing to establish and bring to book the culprits.

"There is a house that had been occupied by two university students and some people broke into and got away with two phones and a cooking gas stove. The matter is currently under investigation," she said.
