Residents of Kawira village, Gatungu North are decrying the increasing cases of theft in the area.

Locals claim that alcohol addicts are the ones who have been stealing their farm produce which they (the addicts) in return sell at cheaper prices to get money for chang'aa.

They said that the addicts have been waiting for them to harvest, prepare and store the farm produce is when they come and steal.

Wambui Gatonye, a farmer, also claimed that the criminals have been destroying and uprooting their immature crops from their farms.

“We are perturbed by these incidents. Our addicted sons are now stealing anything they come along to purchase the illicit brew. Some are now walking naked while others are on the verge of losing their conscience,” Gatonye said.

Gatonye noted that the increasing theft cases might impoverish them, saying that starvation might start hitting them.

“We don’t know whether we will harvest anything this season. We normally plant our crops for subsistence and sale purposes but as for now, we are heading to a point of demanding relief food from the government,” she added.

She said they have made numerous complaints to local security organs but nothing has been done regarding their plight.

Joan Muthoni, another farmer added that the criminals have been stealing from them even in the broad daylight.

“They have turned us into beggars and we can no longer sustain ourselves,” Muthoni decried.

The locals are now requesting local authorities to move with speed and address the increased insecurity and high uptake of illicit drinks.
