Former National Assembly Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim says he is lucky to be alive after an attempt on his life on Thursday, July 28, 2022.

In a statement, Maalim said he evaded an attack staged by unknown assailants while on a campaign trail in Garissa County.

According to the Wiper party deputy leader, the attackers had planted Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in his campaign route to Liboi.

But hawk-eyed security officers got intelligence of the planned attack and thwarted it.

"They halted my convoy, rerouted us to a safe detour and engaged services of bomb disposal experts. They then detonated the IED’s with ease. My profound gratitude to our officers," Maalim said.

He added: "The exploded IEDs left a crater in the road. Congratulations to our gallant security officers for saving lives during this critical electioneering period."

Maalim is eyeing the Dadaab Constituency seat in the August 9 polls.
