Former Chief Justice David Maraga has distanced himself from a tweet upholding Kenya Kwanza presidential candidate William Ruto's win in August 9 polls.

The tweet purported to be a statement by Maraga, saying William Ruto should be sworn-in on August 30, because “he won fairly and squarely" in the just concluded general election.

Through his Twitter, Maraga clarified that the said tweet is fake and asked Kenyans to ignore it.

"This tweet circulating on social media purporting to be authored by me is FAKE, please ignore," he said.

This fake tweet was first posted by a user going by @keerulanah(it has since been deleted). It was not tweeted by Maraga.

Later versions of the image have been circulating online with a disclaimer and the fake timestamp cropped out.
