Former Laikipia East MP Anthony Mutahi has been charged with stealing a title deed of land valued at Sh18.8 million.

Appearing before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku on Thursday, January 14, the former MP denied the five fraud-related charges levelled against him.

Mutahi is accused of stealing the title deeds at the Ministry of Lands headquarters at Ardhi House.

He denied the charges -- stealing, conspiracy to defraud, making a false document, obtaining land registration by false pretences and fraud -- and was released on a cash bail of Sh300,000 or Sh1 million bond.

His lawyer, Gregory Ndege, Mutahi pleaded for leniency saying the lawmaker is a first-time offender and has cooperated with the investigating officer.

He assured the court that the MP will attend court when required and will not interfere with witnesses.
