Equity Bank Kenya has issued a statement after robbers invaded its Kisumu branch situated on Angawa Avenue.

In a statement released on Tuesday, November 23, the bank said that police are at the scene of the crime adding that no cash was stolen during the four-hour standoff between the suspected thieves and police.

“We had an incident where armed robbers gained access into the banking hall of our Kisumu Angawa Branch. Security agents led by local authorities are currently on the scene. The staff are safe and no cash was lost,” the statement read in part.

The bank further informed its clients in Kisumu of other ways they can use in order to access services as police launch investigations into the Tuesday morning robbery.

According to sources privy to the Tuesday morning theft, the robbers entered the bank’s hall at around 11 am and threw tear gas canisters inside the banking hall which caused a commotion.

Police officers got to the scene about half an hour after the robbery began but failed to arrest the robbers who hurled tear gas canisters at them leading to a four-hour siege.

Speaking to the press after the robbery, Nyanza Regional Commissioner Mugu Mutindika said the robbers disguised themselves as clients in order to avoid arrest.

“We have in our possession a man’s shirt. We suspect that the robbers had a change of clothes and left the banking hall during the evacuation of distressed clients,” the Regional Commissioner said.
