Learning at St. Benedict Arror Secondary School in Elgeyo Marakwet was disrupted this afternoon after gunshots were fired some meters from the compound just as students were taking their lunch.

According to the school principal, Lucy Okumu, who recorded the incident, gunshots were heard about 200m from the school compound. The gunfire prompted the students to seek cover under dining tables in scare of their lives. Villagers also rushed their livestock to the school compound where they said was much safer.

Students from neighbouring schools also flocked the school's compound to seek shelter from the gunshots that lasted for about 20-30minutes.

Speaking to K24 Digital on phone, the school principal stated that the students are still struggling to come to terms with the traumatizing event.

"Yesterday one person was shot dead near Tort Sub-county hospital by the suspected cattle raiders. So far a number totaling 62 people have been killed by the bandits,” said deputy governor Elgeyo Marakwet Wesley Korir who said that it's not normal banditry.
