Drunken revellers numbering nearly 200 hundred on Saturday night took to stoning police officers after they were cornered illegally gathered in Kiwandani village in Kilifi County.

Police officers were forced to shoot in the air to disperse the revellers and to protect themselves from the rowdy bunch of drunkards.

The police officers said that they were tipped off by members of the public that revellers numbering about 200 were taking mnazi - palm wine- at the village situated 3km north of their station.

Led by the Kilifi Police Station’s Deputy OCS Opiyo, the officers rushed to the scene where they encountered the crowd, that instantly turned hostile.

The revellers pelted stones at the officers who then had to shoot in the air.

The police officers managed to arrest 15 people, including a regular police officer based at Masii Police Station in Machakos County and a prison warder based at the Shimo La Tewa Prison in Mombasa County.

The arrested suspects are set to be charged with failure to wear face masks and gathering in public illegally contrary to government directives issued to protect Kenyans from coronavirus disease.
