There was drama at Materi police station in Tharaka South Sub-county, Tharaka Nithi County after a police officer escaped with a police vehicle with dead body on board.

According to a police statement seen by K24 Digital, Meshack Simiyu attached to Marimanti police post was rescued by police officers from Materi police station when they found him being subjected to mob injustice after causing disturbance at Materi centre.

The officers, who rescued him, had gone to collect a dead person.

"He boarded the vehicle and sat at passenger seat with OCS. On reaching the station, the OCS alighted so that the officers could escort the body to Marimanti Level Five Hospital.

"The driver also alighted and went for a short call leaving the engine running since it had covered many kilometres and left P.C Simiyu inside the vehicle who happened to drive away with a high speed heading to unknown direction," the statement read in part.

The officers followed him using private means and caught up with him at Ishiara police station after an emergency roadblock was erected to nab the escapee.

"The OCS Marimanti said the officer was of unsound mind. He was driven back and collected by Stapol Marimanti for further action," statement concluded.

No one was injured during the incident.
