A 19-year-old man detained at the Bura Police Station in Tana River County on Monday, November 30 escaped custody after attacking a cop tasked with manning him when he (suspect) visited the toilet in the wee hours of the morning.

Abdul Awath smeared the face of Police Constable Anthony Wanjau with faeces and escaped to an unknown destination.

Awath, who was in lawful custody for assault, had earlier Monday requested to be allowed to visit the toilet. Wanjau, who was on duty, offered to escort him to the lavatory.

However, while in the toilet, Awath took long to come out, prompting Wanjau to knock and inquire whether the suspect was okay.

“The prisoner, thereafter, opened the toilet door and smeared the officer’s face with his poop. He had put the poop in a bottle of water. After committing the act, he ran away,” reads a part of a report of the incident filed at the Bura Police Station under the OB Number 12/30/11/2020.

Police Constable Wanjau attempted to run after Awath, but the detainee outran him.

Awath had been charged with assault and was to be produced in court for a mention of his case on December 10, 2020.
