Deputy Presidential Debate; Rigathi, Karua educational backgrounds

The long-awaited Deputy Presidential debate will finally be going down at the Catholic University of East Africa.

The debate, which is set to proceed in two tiers, will see Kenya Kwanza's Rigathi Gachagua and Azimio's Martha Karua face off in the second tier as Justin Mae of Roots Party and Ruth Mutua of Agano party battle it out in the first-tier debate.

The second tier of the debate is under the spotlight since it pits running mates of the most popular presidential candidates against each other.

Christened the 'Iron Lady' due to her no-nonsense demeanour, Karua will take on the abrasive Gachagua, famed for shooting from the hip.

The duo will wrestle in a battle of wits as they showcase their prowesses in the articulation of policies of their respective political formations.

Here is a spot-check of the candidate's educational background;

Martha Karua's educational background

The long-serving politician began her education at St Michael’s Primary School before she proceeded to Kabare Girls Boarding School, Kiburia Girls Secondary School and later to Karoti Girls High School where she completed her basic education.

Having performed excellently at Karoti Girls High School, the former Minister of Justice joined the University of Nairobi to pursue a degree in law in 1977 before she enrolled for further studies at the Kenya School of Law in 1981.

After her graduation, Karua became a magistrate operating in several parts of the country among them Nakuru, Kibera and Makadara, a role she held for six years before she went into private practice.

Rigathi Gachagua's educational background

Gachagua went through Kabiruini Primary School for his primary education before proceeding to Kianyaga High School for his secondary school education.

Gachagua studied Political Science at the Marine Corps University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree and Literature from the University of Nairobi.

He is a former District Officer in Ngarua division in Laikipia and Kakamega having served during the Moi era before he left to work for his brother, the late Nderitu Gachagua, who was a governor for Nyeri County.

He started as an assistant secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs and National Heritage in 1989, before being promoted to become a District Officer.
