DCI seize counterfeit alcohol, fake KRA stamps in Kahawa Sukari

In a joint operation carried out by detectives from the Economic Crimes Unit and officials from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), a significant consignment of counterfeit alcoholic drinks and fake KRA stamps was confiscated in the Kahawa Sukari and Kamulu areas of the city.

The operation, which took place on October 13, 2023, uncovered a startling cache of illicit goods. A total of 1,078 bottles of counterfeit alcoholic drinks, one roll of counterfeit KRA stamps, 630 litres of ethanol, 10,300 empty bottles, and four sacks of assorted bottle caps were recovered in the raid.

"In a raid conducted by detectives from the Economic Crimes Unit and officials from KRA, 1078 bottles of counterfeit alcoholic drinks, one roll of counterfeit KRA Stamps, 630 litres of ethanol, 10,300 empty bottles and four sacks of assorted bottle caps were recovered," the DCI statement read in part.

The DCI noted that the estimated value of the seized ethanol and counterfeit alcoholic drinks exceeds Ksh500,000.

The counterfeit KRA stamps are estimated to be worth Ksh4 million.

"The value of the seized ethanol and alcoholic drinks is estimated at over Sh500,000 while the counterfeit stamps are worth Sh4 million," the statement read.

Investigations are now underway to trace the origins of the ethanol and the source of these fake KRA stamps.

"A seizure notice was issued, and the goods impounded as detectives investigate the source of the ethanol and the fake KRA stamps," DCI said.
