Daring residents of Laare town, Meru County on Sunday night attacked a newly posted police commander and disarmed him of his official firearm.

The criminals claimed that Chief Inspector Mathew Chelimo, who was recently transferred to the Laare police station, was interfering with their undisclosed operations within the town.

The men laid ambush for the station commander who had gone to Kisima Mbaine hotel within the town for dinner.

As the OCS was leaving the hotel, which is about 1km from the station, the men armed with crude weapons attacked him.

Chelimo struggled with them but he was overpowered by the men who robbed him of his firearm, a Jericho pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition.

By Monday evening, no one had been arrested nor the firearm recovered. Police have launched investigations and a manhunt for the gang.
