A key witness in a murder case recounted in an Eldoret court how his close friend was clobbered to death by a businesswoman over a Ksh20 plate of githeri.

Maurice Muthee, a casual labourer recalled that the incident in which his friend George Okoth, a carpenter, was killed happened on a fateful Sunday at around 5 pm in Munyaka estate situated on the outskirts of Eldoret town.

Muthee told the packed court that the woman, whom he said was well known to him, was helped by three young men who held the deceased's hands as she subjected him to beatings on the head.

"I witnessed my friend being clobbered with a blunt object on the head three times by the accused, Nancy Waithera for allegedly refusing to pay for the githeri she had served him," Muthee told Justice Reuben Nyakundi.

Muthee was testifying in a case where Nancy Waithera has denied murdering George Okoth on the evening of the 9th of August 2020 at Munyaka estate in Ainabkoi sub-county, Uasin Gishu County.

Pastor Henry Kamau, the owner of the carpentry shop where the deceased used to work, told the court how he stumbled on his employee as he lay down while writhing in deep pain.

"I was coming from church on that material day when I found George laying down on the road and unable to walk. I asked him what the problem was and he told me that he had been beaten on the head by Nancy," the clergy said.

He told the court that he lifted the deceased up and helped him walk to his house which is situated a few meters from the informal settlement area.

The pastor recounted to the court that this was after the slain carpenter had refused to heed his plea to take him (deceased) to the hospital for treatment saying that he wanted to rest in his house as he monitored his condition.

"Five hours after we had parted ways, I received a call from a friend who told me that George had succumbed to the injuries in his house. That was around 9 pm," he told the Judge.

2 more witnesses to testify in court

The state counsel Mark Mugun told the court he had remained with only two witnesses - an investigation officer and a pathologist from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.

"Your honour, I pray that you give me more time so that I summon them to come to court and give their testimony in relation to this murder case," Mugun said.

Justice Nyakundi adjourned the case until 6th November for further hearing.
