The High Court has issued a temporary order blocking President William Ruto's cabinet decision on the importation of GMOs into the country.

Justice Murage Thande issued the interim orders pending the hearing of a lawsuit by Kenya Peasants League challenging the cabinet decision dated October 3 on the importation of GMOs.

"The court issues conservatory order prohibiting the Attorney General and Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and fisheries by either themselves, through their agents or through such other person acting under their instructions from allowing/permitting the importation of the GMO crops and food into the Country pending the hearing and determination of the case," Thande ordered.

The judge also has barred the government from distributing GMO crops and food in the country.

She directed the Petitioners to serve the government with the pleadings before the hearing of the case on December 15.

In the petition, Kenya Peasants League wants the lift of the November 2012 ban declared unconstitutional for what he termed as ‘violation of the rights of Kenyans’.

The lift was announced on October 3, through the State House Kenya following an agreement after a Cabinet meeting chaired by President William Ruto.
