A police officer living at the Mathare Sexual Gender-Based Violence(SGBV) Rescue Centre collapsed and died on Wednesday, January 18, 2023.
Corporal David Chege was in the company of his colleagues who reported that he had complained about feeling dizzy after they arrived at the centre at around 6:00 pm and was offered a chair and support from his colleague Alice Njeri.
In the process of sitting down, Chege is reported to have fallen backwards.

"Constable Alice Njeri based at Mathare SGBV reported that on Wednesday at around 6:00 pm while in the company of her colleague corporal David Chege, who is her neighbour at the camp complained of feeling dizzy and asked for her support. She offered him a seat and in the process, he fell backwards," the police report read in part.
Njeri called for help which attracted their colleagues who helped rush him to MSF Hospital in Mathare.
Chege was pronounced dead on arrival by the doctors.
The body of the deceased was moved to Kenyatta University Hospital morgue awaiting a postmortem.
This comes a few days after two officers were attacked by revelers who had been arrested during a night patrol.
The five are expected to be arraigned in court today.
According to a police report seen by K24 Digital, the two officers while on patrol along Kang’ethe road near Toi market came across a Wines and Spirits shop which was operating without a liquor license and they proceeded to arrest the seller.
During the apprehension process, two male adults who were consuming alcohol and shisha at the joint hurled insults at the police officers and threatened to set their Motor Vehicle on fire.
A scuffle ensued and Inspector Fred Nyamoko and Constable Joseph Kisang were injured on the elbows and suffered multiple soft tissue injuries.
“While on patrol along Joseph Kang’ethe Road in Toi Market, police officers came across a Wines and Spirits joint that was operating without a liquor license.
"They proceeded to arrest the seller and they were hurled insults by two African males who were taking alcohol and shisha at the joint. The two went ahead and even threatened to set ablaze the vehicle of the police officers,” the police report read in part.
