Angry locals of Kiminini market in Trans Nzoia County on Wednesday night June 29 2022 set ablaze a van belonging to Kiminini Constituency Member of Parliament and Trans Nzoia gubernatorial hopeful Chris Wamalwa.

The campaign vehicle is said to have knocked down an unidentified woman pedestrian killing her on the spot - police confirmed.

Confirming the incident, Kiminini Sub County Police Commander, John Onditi said the fatal accident occurred after the vehicle plunged into a ditch.

"What happened is a normal traffic accident that is fatal. It killed a woman and angry locals flocked the scene and burnt the vehicle. The driver's leg was also broken in the accident," Onditi confirmed.

Onditi said police officers responded and help contain the situation.

"We rushed to the scene and on arrival, the vehicle had already been burnt. We have since contained the situation" he added.

The injured driver is recuperating at Kiminini Cottage hospital.

Chris Wamalwa offers condolences

Chris Wamalwa through his Twitter handle expressed sympathy and asked for prayers for the bereaved family.

"My condolences to the family and friends of the late Florence Apondi, who died following a grisly road accident, involving one of my campaign vehicles" read part of the statement.

The body of the victim was taken to Kitale County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
