Former Finance Minister Chris Obure has every reason to smile after being acquitted in the Ksh928million anglo-leasing case.

Obure has been acquitted alongside, Former Transport and Communication permanent secretary Sammy Kyungu and ex-Finance Secretary Samuel Bundotich.

The decision comes after trial magistrate Ann Mwangi noted that the prosecution did not provide sufficient evidence to convict the trio, arguing that the accused stood acquitted in the absence of evidence.

She further defended her decision stating that the trio did not directly benefit from the funds, as demonstrated by their lawyers.

Before the new development, the three had been accused of authorizing Ksh928million for use in the postal corporation security project.

They were also found with a case to answer graft charges, including abuse of office and breach of trust.

Obure expresses excitement

While lauding the decision by the trial court, Obure expressed excitement, commending the court for considering the evidence by the prosecution and defense lawyers.

He further stated that the case cost him the Kisii gubernatorial seat in 2017, but since the truth is finally out, he is free to conduct his daily activities.
