Busia: Class 8 pupil dies after he was choked by bread which was his present for being punctual in school

A Class 8 pupil was choked on bread to death at Sikura Primary School in Butula constituency, Busia county after he was awarded a loaf of bread and a bottle of soda for being one of the most disciplined pupils in the school.

According to Butula Sub-County Police Commander Jacob Chelimo, the school headteacher Dismas Pepela reported that the pupils had gathered for a ceremony to award outstanding pupils in various categories before the unfortunate incident happened.

He says H.O (we have hidden his name); who was awarded for punctuality in school died shortly after he was choked by his gift and collapsed.

The KCPE candidate lost his life at Bulwani Dispensary where teachers and pupils rushed him for medication.

“The headteacher reported to the police that around 4:00 pm in the evening, the pupils had gathered for a ceremony to award some pupils for outstanding performance in various categories.

"One of the pupils identified as H.O. was choked while eating bread and he, unfortunately, died while receiving treatment at Bulwani dispensary. My officers went to the scene and confirmed the incident,” Chelimo said.

He says the matter has been taken up by DCI.
