At least 59 students were rushed to Metropolitan Hospital on Sunday evening after fire broke out at Buru Buru Girls High School.

Explaining the genesis of the fire, school principal Caroline Maina said the fire occured after an engagement with form one and form two students.

"I had a baraza with form one and form two from morning until around 2:30 pm where I had even invited counsellors to talk to the students. It is after the counselling session that I invited my guests for late lunch. As I was walking back , a teacher approached me notifying me that one of the dormitory was on fire", she said.

She at the same time urged parents to let the children stay in school.

" I'm appealing with parents to allow the school handle the situation because of security reasons outisde the school. Be sure we are in control of the situation. We have enough security in the school and we want to handle the situation", she said.

On their part, police said the cause of the fire was not immediately clear, but an investigation had been launched.

Soon after the fire broke out, more than a dozen parents arrived at the school and demanded to be allowed to go home with their children leading to a stand off.

“No one is telling us anything and that is why we want to be allowed to go home with our children,” one parent said.

Police and the school management had a hard time restraining the agitated parents as fire fighters struggled to put out the blaze.

Confirming the incident, Buruburu Sub-County Police Commander Francis Kamau said firefighters were at the scene.

He, however, said they can still not know if some students are trapped in the burning dormitory.

"Officers and firefighters are at the schools, but it is still too early to know what happened or the extent of the damage".

Area Mp who also visited the scene George Aladwa alled upon the investigate agencies to probe the rampant cases of fire in the area.

He said this is the third school in the sub county to have a fire outbreak this year.

"This is not normal and something needs to be done and the DCI should commence its investigation on the cases of fire in our schools," Aladwa said.
