A fierce fire has gutted one of the dormitories at Buruburu Girls High School in Nairobi.

The school caught fire minutes to 5 pm today with students escaping through the windows as smoke engulfed the building.

In a video seen by K24-Digital, locals rushed to the scene but could not access the school compound.

The cause of the inferno is yet to be established but the firefighters were already at the scene to help contain it.

At least 59 students were injured and rushed to Metropolitan Hospital for medical attention using ambulances.

30 were later discharged and 10 have been admitted.

Explaining the genesis of the fire, school principal Caroline Maina said the fire occurred after an engagement with form one and form two students.

“I had a baraza with form one and form two from morning until around 2:30 pm where I had even invited counsellors to talk to the students. It is after the counselling session that I invited my guests for late lunch. As I was walking back, a teacher approached me notifying me that one of the dormitories was on fire”, she said.

She at the same time urged parents to let the children stay in school.
