A five-storey building has collapsed in Kihara area near Gachie in Kiambu County leaving several people trapped under the debris.

The tragedy occurred shortly after 3:00 pm.

The construction workers were putting up the sixth floor when the accident occurred.

According to a witness, four workers managed to escape the tragedy with minor injuries. They were rushed to the hospital for medication.

"We were just sitting outside here when we suddenly heard of a loud bang. We looked around and saw huge dust from a building that was collapsing. I called our area MCA, chief and informed them of the tragedy. We thank God that vehicles came to help. The four who were on top of the building jumped and have been taken to the hospital," a witness told K24 Digital.

The witness revealed that those who are trapped were painters and welders who were working on the building's windows.

Kiambu Deputy County Commissioner Peter Maina has confirmed that so far nine persons have been rescued and are receiving treatment in various hospitals in the county. He says four of them are in critical condition and that about five are still trapped in the building's debris.

It was also established that the building was erected too fast and concerns emerged when they were putting up the third floor but the matter was ignored.

"This building was constructed too fast. It had some issues when they reached the third floor because residents here complained about it. It appeared it had no balance," another witness recounted.

Police officers have been dispatched to coordinate rescue operations.
