Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari is safe after an incident involving the security detail at his main residence in the capital, Abuja, according to his spokesperson.

Details are still sketchy but president's spokesperson Garba Shehu said the incident is under investigation.

"This is to assure everyone that the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces is not, and was not at anytime in any form of danger arising, either from deadly infections or the reported incident by security personnel which is currently under investigation," Mr Shehu said on Twitter.

He added that some staff had been arrested by the police.

The president's spokesperson said security officers assigned to the president's residence will also be investigated for their handling of weapons during the incident.

Local media report the incident happened on Friday and involved aides of first lady Aisha Buhari and guards at the presidential villa.

Mrs Buhari has since tweeted calling for the release of her aides.
