The body of a fisherman who drowned in Lake Victoria next to Kibuogi Island within Suba South Sub County, Homa Bay, on January 31, 2023, has finally been found.
The body of Joshua Otieno was retrieved from Lake Victoria by a team of fishermen who had been on a search mission on Monday morning.
The body was found floating on the lake nine days after he drowned.
Suba South Beach Management Unit Chairman William Onditi said a team of fellow fishermen on a search mission found the body floating on the lake before it was brought to the mainland.
Otieno is among two fishermen who drowned in the Lake last Tuesday while on a fishing expedition.
Onditi said the body was moved to Sindo Sub County mortuary for preservation as the family makes quick burial arrangements.
Meanwhile, a search for the body of another fisherman who drowned at Milundi beach, Mfang'ano Island Suba Central Sub County is ongoing 10 days after he went missing.
"There is another body of a fisherman who drowned at Milundi beat at Mgang'ano Island who drowned in the Lake ten days ago whose body is still at large," he said.
"The family members have been visiting a number of beaches in search of his body and are now worried that the body might not finally be found," he added.
The chairman appealed to fishermen or any other Lake users who might come across any lifeless body in the Lake to report to relevant authorities for identification.
Elsewhere, the body of Bahati Ongoje, a middle-aged man who is a resident of Gwassi from the lake at Ragwe beach.
The body of the late Ongoje was retrieved by the fishermen who had been on a search mission last Saturday evening five days after the incident occurred.
Ongoje drowned close to Wadiang'a beach, Sindo, at night while on a fishing expedition.
He is said to have fallen asleep while in the Lake, however when he woke up, he started walking on the boat before he fell into the Lake.
"According to the report we have, the late Ongoje met his death after he fell into the after up from a slumber from his boat while on a fishing mission on Tuesday night," he said.
"However efforts by his colleagues to rescue him proved futile since he had already drowned," he said.
He was also on a fishing expedition during the ugly incident when the incident occurred. He, however, advised the fishermen to study the weather before embarking on such missions due to strong waves currently being experienced in the Lake.
At the same time, the chairman warned the fishermen against going into the Lake while intoxicated saying the action has for last caused the lives of many fishermen while on their mission, especially at night.
