Police on Friday, September 20, nabbed bhang worth Ksh3 million in a middle-aged woman’s house in Kisauni, Mombasa.

Coast regional commissioner, John Elungata, said the busting and subsequent arrest of the woman is part of the government’s “spirited crackdown” on illegal drug traders in Kenya’s Coast.

“The female suspect owns the house, where the bhang was found. We expect to take her to court on Tuesday, September 24,” Elungata told K24 Digital.

Elungata said that the crackdown also resulted in 14 other suspects being arrested in connection with illegal brew trade.

“Twenty liters of chang’aa was nabbed, and the 14 suspects are expected in court on Monday, September 23,” Elungata said.

The bhang was burnt and the illicit alcohol poured, with Elungata saying they arrived at that decision to make the public trust that the illegal products won’t find their way back to the market.

Questions over what the authorities will produce in court as evidence, now linger.

Kisauni residents commended police for cracking down on hard-core illicit drug peddlers, but urged the law enforcement agents to cast their nets wide so as to tame the rising insecurity on the area.

Bodaboda operators, Francis Ngala and Daniel Mukaka, who spoke K24 Digital, said some of their colleagues were recently waylaid, robbed of their motorbikes and killed by unknown gang terrorising Kisauni dwellers.

Elungata vowed to act on the Kisauni residents’ concerns.
