A one-year-old baby was on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, severely burnt after the mattress in the Mwiki apartment where the toddler was left caught fire while the mother was away at the market.

The child was saved by other tenants who rushed her to Mama Lucy hospital as the mother was not yet back at the time.

“One of the tenants informed me that a mattress in one of the houses had caught fire and a one-year-old child who was in the house severely burnt. The child whose mother had gone to the market was rescued by the tenants and rushed to the hospital,” the caretaker told the police.

The baby was later referred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) where she is currently receiving treatment.

Police have launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire.

In a second incident, police in Buruburu launched investigations to establish the cause of a fire that destroyed property of unknown value in Savannah estate, Donholm.

The fire is reported to have started in one of eight mabati (iron sheet) houses which were among those burnt before it spread to a four-bedroomed maisonette.

Firefighters from Nairobi county arrived and helped put off the fire.

“It was reported that huge smoke was seen coming from one of the houses and it was established that there was a fire in houses number 232 and 231 of in the savannah estate. The fire then spread to eight more mabati houses before it got to the four-bedroomed mansion,” the police report stated.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
