Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has been charged with attempted murder and disorderly behaviuor while carrying a firearm.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has also opposed the controversial MP's release on bail.

The prosecutor told the court on Monday that the incident in which the MP shot and injured a DJ at the B-Club in Nairobi is still under investigation.

In opposing his bail application, deputy DPP Jacob Ondari told the court that the charge is a serious offence that carries a penalty of life imprisonment if the suspect is found guilty.

As such, Mr Ondari said the heavy penalty can make the accused abscond court.

But Babu's lawyer, Cliff Ombeta, countered Ondari's argument terming it an application based on assumptions and that no compelling reasons have been adduced to prove that his client will not honour bail terms.
